Brief history

Phentermine was first approved by the Food and Drug administration in 1959 as a short term treatment for exogenous obesity. In 1959, only Phentermine resin was available in the United States and in 1970 Phentermine hydrochloride became available. Phentermine became popular partly due to its being significantly cheaper when compared to other diet pills in the market. In fact, in its heydays Phentermine accounted for half of the prescriptions for appetite suppressants.

Setbacks

When Phentermine was combined with other drugs that also treat obesity to form cocktail drugs, several setbacks occurred. Fen-Phen, a combination of Fenfluramine and Phentermine , had been an overnight sensation when a study made by Dr. Michael Weintraub and his colleagues of the University of Rochester cited Fen-Phen as a better treatment for obesity than diet and exercise. This is also true with another cocktail Dexfen-Phen, a combination of Dexfenfluramine and Phentermine. Dexfen-Phen also became popular for the treatment of obesity.

However, Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine had been implicated to cause heart valve disease and primary pulmonary hypertension, respectively. In 1997, the FDA requested the manufacturers of these two drugs to pull out these drugs from the marker amidst rising evidences of their involvement in such medical conditions.

Phentermine was never clearly connected to cause these diseases.
